HappiCities of a New India in the 21st Century

Based on the pace and direction that India’s urban development story has been unfolding over the past decades it is estimated that 800 million out of 1.7 billion Indians will live in cities by 2050, more than 300 million private motor vehicles will ply on Indian roads, commute times will double, more than 12 million hectares of agricultural land will be urbanized and every major mega city will face water crisis. Continuing business as usual is simply not an option any more. While the roots of our everyday dysfunctions are many, HappiCities presents a scalable solution to address the root causes of these systemic issues.

Let’s take a moment to consider the everyday problems faced by us that we have all come to take for granted:

  1. Pollution of the air and a decrease in the quality of life.
  2. Hour long commutes.
  3. Water shortage leading to existential crisis.
  4. Recurring Urban Floods during Monsoons.
  5. Noisy and Unruly traffic resulting to loss of life in accidents.
  6. Obsolete, ugly, dirty and failing infrastructure.
  7. Pedestrian and cyclist unfriendly roads.
  8. Inability to adapt to evolving technologies and lifestyles.
  9. Isolation of rural citizens from benefits of urbanization
  10. Speculation driven land and housing prices.

It’s time we stopped putting up with these seemingly “unsolvable” problems. HappiCities brings together the core urban design principles focused on healthy, sustainable, efficient and most importantly, a happier life.

What makes a HappiCity?

Instead of growing megacities beyond their capacity, HappiCities Labs aims to design and build a cluster of distributed and connected fixed size Microcities that will bring the benefits of a high-value Knowledge economy based urbanisation closer to rural habitats. This will spur a symbiotic economy between them. A fixed size and limited population ensures a sustainable and sufficient supply and availability of energy, food and water. Cluster of small sized and self-sufficient MicroCities built on Transit Oriented Development Model reduces our fuel consumption and pollution by removing the dependency on motor vehicles for transport and encouraging walk-to-work.

  • Sustainable & healthy living
  • Safety and security
  • Efficiency in mobility
  • Affordability
  • Customer obsessed service and local self-governance

Environmental consciousness by design

HappiCities Labs pledges to fulfill its environmental protection responsibility by planting trees along the roads & around buildings, getting all buildings and the city certified by IGBC, generating green solar energy wherever possible, reduce dependency on motor vehicle for daily commute, net-zero discharge by reuse and recycle of water and waste, and planting a dense forest around the HappiCity.

Beyond smart cities

A happy life is of top priority to our HappiCitizens, as measured by the Happiness Index. We address the root causes of unhappy urban lives in existing cities and provide sustainable long term solutions in HappiCities. While “smart cities” dabble in temporary and unsustainable workarounds to solve problems, technology in HappiCities is not treated as an end, but as a means to achieve Happiness. We create a repeatable, scalable & customizable model and framework for a happy urban life.

Smart Technology can only be a means and not an end to achieve Happiness.
