The HappiCity Model

HappiCites are a cluster of connected MicroCities that are fixed in size & population, sustainable for food, energy & water, green energy efficient, discharges zero-waste, smart-by-default, future ready and upgradeable to changing technology and lifestyle, knowledge industry centric, rural incubated, affordable to all economic classes, accessible to differently-abled, inclusive, customer service obsessed, self-governed, beautiful, modern and clean.

Design Principles for the future urbanization

Instead of growing megacities beyond their capacity, HappiCities Labs envisions a cluster of distributed and connected micro-cities that will bring the benefits of urbanisation closer to rural habitats, spur a local rural economy around it and encourage reverse migration. In order to address all of the issues with existing cities, a HappiCity is committed to a few vital design principles that guide its design and development.

Sustainability (Food, Water & Energy)

A water source can only sustain and nourish limited life. The farmers surrounding the city provides cheap organic food. Green energy generated locally from solar panels, biofuel and windmills provide alternative sustainable and renewable energy to the city. Thus we achieve sustainability in terms of food, water and energy by limiting both size and population, generating energy wherever possible and build the microcity amidst farms to keep the area porous to recharge the groundwater levels sufficiently.

Climate friendly urbanization

HappiCities are designed with a walk-to-work culture in mind. Reducing dependency on private transport for daily commute is the only long term and permanent solution to traffic and pollution problems. Zero-waste will be achieved through reuse, reduce and recycle with the right education and incentivisation. All buildings will be IGBC certified and the city designed for an IGBC Green Cities platinum rating.

Upgradable to state-of-the-art Technologies & lifestyles

Lifestyle is state-of-the-art and continuously changes as technology evolves. Cities must continuously evolve to adapt to current lifestyles and future trends. The city is designed and engineered for the latest lifestyles and technologies and are upgradeable by design.

Inclusive & Affordable

Inclusive community is the basis of a Happy Community. Affordable to wide range of economic income group. Low cost housing (Dorms, Studios & small 1 BHK apts) reserved for low income group citizens and discounted city fees. Rental and Lease only housing reduces financial burden on resident.

Design public & private spaces and mobility for accessibility. Ramp access to buildings, reserved parking for differently abled, ageing and pregnant women, low floor busses, visual feedback systems (example: fire alarms), audio feedback systems (pedestrian crossing signal beeps etc).

The rise of a “Rurban” Revolution to Reverse Migration

HappiCities bring urban markets, infrastructure and socio-cultural influences closer to farmers and rural citizens of India. The heart and soul of a healthy all-inclusive economy lies in rural economies of scale that will flourish around HappiCities. We uplift farmers out of poverty by increasing their income through direct-to-consumer trade in Farmers’ Market in Happicities and give easy and quick access to the best education and healthcare.

A self-reliant monthly revenue source for Gram Panchayats is the key to build next generation of HappiVillages.

Brain attract and retain

A developed country is built by intellectuals and entrepreneurs.

“Preventing Brain Drain” is a defensive strategy that is outdated. We adopt a more aggressive strategy by designing and building the best urban spaces in India to attract and retain the best brains of the world who’ll architect a New India in the 21st Century.

Celebrating Open Source Culture

We have experienced the benefits & impact of open source projects in the world from Linux to Android. HappiCities Labs will open source the entire technical design specifications and other documents related to financial, legal and constitutional framework of HappiCities.

  • HappiCities Labs plans to invite experts from India and around the world to participate in open design challenges, request for comments and knowledge sharing sessions.
  • Happicities Labs shall make all the design, legal framework, agreement templates, and technical specifications available for all to download in this website.
  • Open Source helps to bootstrap other private city initiatives.
  • Possibility of franchise model - only if HappiCities Labs is involved directly.
  • Anyone can use our open source documents to build more MicroCities at scale.

Our first steps to a happier future

Building a city is no small task, but with significant planning even the quintessential Rome of our day can be built.

Incorporating the City as a Company

Under the 74th Amendment of the constitution a group of gram / Nagar panchayats incorporate a city as a company and outsource their Urban Local Planning and Municipality roles and responsibilities to HappiCities Labs.

CrowdSourcing and CrowdFunding the City

HappiCities are built by crowdsourcing land and infrastructure by private entities and individuals under a PPP model - Build, Transfer, Operate and Earn. The Gram Panchayats, land poolers and city infra builders get shares of the city as per their contribution. Additional funding is raised by selling the shares of the city to institutional and retail investors as well as taking loans from Banks.

Revenue Sharing Model

  • The City collects monthly city fees from the residents and businesses.
  • Estimated revenue at full occupancy is 80-100 crores per month.
  • The monthly revenue is paid as dividend to the shareholders after deducting operating expenses.
